Spotlight - High School Electives (Spanish and Public Speaking)

Spanish I and Spanish II (middle and high school students) - Avancemos I and Avancemos II, Houghton Mifflin, 2013. Student text and workbook
Introduction to Public Speaking (middle and high school students) - No required textbook

Sure Foundation has foreign language classes suitable for middle or high school students in the 2020-2021 school year, as well as a Public Speaking course for the same age group. Here's our spotlight on what to expect in Spanish I and II, and in Intro to Public Speaking:

Spanish I (middle and high school students)

This is a full year, one-credit course for high school students. Middle school students that complete the class may earn one high school credit. The class time is 1-1/2 hours each week, and students will have homework and assignments to do at home.

Are there required books or extra fees?  The required textbook is Avancemos I, Houghton Mifflin, 2013. Student text and workbook. There are no other textbooks or materials required.

How is the class structured? The first twenty minutes of each class will be homework review and a weekly quiz. There will be 65 minutes of instruction time consisting of vocabulary and grammar, listening to Spanish spoken by native Spanish speakers, oral and reading practice, and occasionally games or food. Five minutes of each class time will be set aside for explaining the week's assignment.

How much homework can we expect? Homework will be give each week to be completed by the next class session. The instructor will divide each week's homework into Dia Uno, Dia Dos, Dia Tres, Dia Cuatro, and Di Cinco. The homework for each day is expected to take at least half an hour.

How will students be graded? One portion of each week's homework will be graded as if it's a quiz. Students will not know ahead of time which "Dia" of work will be graded. Hopefully this will encourage good, focused work on all five days! During class, there is only a limited amount of time to work on grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation; or to practice what is being learned. Homework is assigned to help reteach and reinforce this information throughout the week.

Are there quizzes and tests? Yes, each week there will be a quiz which will be graded. One "dia" of the homework will be graded. And at the end of each unit, there will be an Open Book test which is to be taken at home. Students may use the text or their notes for the test.

Spanish II (middle and high school students)

This is a full-year, one credit course for high school students. Middle school students that have completed the first level may take this class and earn one high school credit. The class time is 1-1/2 hours each week, and students will have homework and assignments to do at home.

Are there required books or extra fees?  The required textbook is Avancemos II, Houghton Mifflin, 2013. Student text and workbook. There are no other textbooks or materials required.

How is the class structured? Just as in Spanish I, the first part of each class will be spent on homework review and the weekly quiz. The instruction time will include vocabulary and grammar, listening to Spanish spoken by native Spanish speakers, oral and reading practice, and occasionally games or food. Students are reminded to bring their Verb Cards to class each week! During the year, students will be memorizing Psalm 23 in Spanish. The rationale for this is that students may be able to go on mission trips to Spanish-speaking populations, and having a passage of Scripture memorized may afford them the opportunity to speak to someone about God and Jesus.

How much homework can we expect? Homework will be give each week to be completed by the next class session. The instructor will divide each week's homework into Dia Uno, Dia Dos, Dia Tres, Dia Cuatro, and Di Cinco. The homework for each day is expected to take at least half an hour. Students will need to access the website www.classzone.com as an important part of the homework.

How will students be graded? One portion of each week's homework will be graded, but students will not know ahead of time which "Dia" of work will be graded. With a limited amount of time in class to work on grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation, it's so important that students give attention to the homework which is designed to help them master the skills.

Are there quizzes and tests? Yes, each week there will be a quiz which will be graded. A portion of the weekly homework will be graded. At the end of each unit, there will be an Open Book test which is to be taken at home. Students may use the text or their notes for the test, but parents are asked to monitor during the test time as students should not be using Google or any online translator.

Intro to Public Speaking (middle school and high school)

This is a one semester, half credit course for middle and high school students. The class time is 55 minutes each week, and students will have homework to do during the week.

There are no pre-requisites for the class, and no required books or extra fees.

How much homework can we expect? Homework will consist of analyzing online speeches or presentations in preparation for class discussion. Students will also write short speeches and prepare for presentations in class.

How will class time be structured? Classes will include improv games to help the student get accustomed to performing in front of others. We will watch and discuss public speaking videos. We will also engage in public speaking projects such as memorizing and reading a Bible verse, poem, or children's book.
